WORK

What Jay does outside of dinner

Translation, software, and the small operations that pay for the groceries. Some of this is why people come to BJL in the first place — and some of it is the reason we host.

Translation & book work

Japanese↔English STEM translation. Jay reviews technical books where the intersection of bilingual ability + subject-matter expertise is hardest to find.

プログラミングのための数学大全 (Essential Math for AI)

Nikkei BP · publication 2026

Supervising translator (監訳者) for the Japanese edition of No Starch Press's Essential Math for AI, forthcoming from Nikkei BP. Reviewed mathematical accuracy across 16 chapters — catching notation errors, broken derivations, and domain-specific mistranslations.

Discrete Mathematics: An Open Introduction

In planning

Japanese translation of Oscar Levin's CC-licensed open textbook. JDialogs's first self-published title, targeting Amazon KDP Japan.

Software & apps

Tools Jay built — mostly language learning + creative practice software, plus the technology behind the small businesses that fund BJL.

KanjiJourney

Kanji learning app built on sequenced acquisition + spaced repetition. Mobile + web, JP/EN audiences.

KanjiSage

AI kanji tutor; companion to KanjiJourney. Helps learners reason about characters they haven't seen before.

EigoJourney + EigoSage

English-side counterparts to the Kanji apps, designed for Japanese learners of English.

PianoQuest

Piano learning + ear-training + repertoire builder. Same pedagogical philosophy as the language apps: puzzle-solving, not rote.

JWorks AI

Parent portfolio for the technology + 3D printing operations under JWorks. AI-agent infrastructure for small business automation.

JayWalks

Bilingual walking tours of Boston, with JP/EN scripted routes and seasonal experiences.
